Fractional leadership
Senior-level execution without full-time executive cost. Rapid deployment to reset momentum, unblock decisions, and clear operational barriers in product, tax, or compliance functions.
Batavia Solutions
Batavia Solutions is the advisory practice of Erik van der Hoeven. We work with SaaS, tax, and compliance teams to reduce operational friction, open new markets, and turn regulatory complexity into predictable execution.
This site publishes the working reference the practice runs on — a book of structured frameworks, a fillable template kit, and a problem router that points teams to the chapter they need before the meeting starts.
Who I am
I help SaaS, tax, and compliance companies grow faster, expand into new markets, and execute with confidence. My work is grounded in more than thirty years of leadership across global tax automation, product strategy, regulatory compliance, and cross-border operations.
I've built and scaled products at Sabrix (now Thomson Reuters), Avalara, and Sovos. I've advised enterprise and mid-market teams through EY's Tax Technology & Transformation group and the Americas Tax Innovation Council. This mix of product leadership, regulatory depth, and hands-on execution is what sets the work apart.
I run a focused advisory practice: step in quickly, diagnose what's slowing teams down, and bring structure and clarity to product, tax, compliance, and go-to-market efforts. Fractional leadership, expansion strategy, alliance development, execution support — the maturity of a senior executive without the cost or timeline of hiring one full-time.
What I bring
Every engagement uses some combination of these. The mix depends on where the team is stuck, not on which lane sounds best on a slide.
Senior-level execution without full-time executive cost. Rapid deployment to reset momentum, unblock decisions, and clear operational barriers in product, tax, or compliance functions.
Global VAT strategy, e-invoicing readiness, FDA and import/export regulations, and cross-border operating models — built with the product and go-to-market teams that have to run them.
Entry strategies for US, EU, and UK. Cross-border VAT navigation coupled to the revenue opportunity, so compliance and growth stop pulling in opposite directions.
Partner ecosystem design, value-proposition work, co-sell pathway construction, and activation. Scattered partner conversations turned into structured, repeatable motions.
Decision-making processes that survive contact with reality. Workflow repair, team alignment, and playbooks the org will actually pick up.
Practical workflows using ChatGPT, Claude, Microsoft 365, Google Gemini, and Lovable. Teams stop asking whether AI helps and start using it where it earns its keep.
Track record
Global product organizations running mission-critical tax and compliance platforms — including solutions generating hundreds of millions in ARR. Teams scaled across the US, Europe, and South America. Integrated e-invoicing, reporting, and automation delivered inside complex multinational environments.
Selected engagements
Direct work or supporting teams, across VAT, indirect tax, digital reporting, e-invoicing, FDA import/export, customs, and global supply chains.
Approach
Strategy connected to delivery. Standard frameworks — MECE, SCQA, value chains, KPI trees, PESTLE, risk registers — applied to real indirect-tax problems: mandate responses, engine selection, ERP integration, audit defense, vendor scorecards. Nothing works better because it sounds sophisticated; nothing gets used unless the team can pick it up on a Tuesday.
Each chapter pairs a consulting framework with a worked example from VAT determination, e-invoicing mandates, ERP integration, or vendor selection. The templates are the artifacts we actually use on engagements. Ask, the problem router, encodes the same decision flow so the book and the tool cannot disagree.
